Not sure you're cleaning your espresso machine correctly?
You're not alone. Cleaning an espresso machine isn't complicated — but the right products and the right schedule depend on what machine you have. Most owners are either doing too little, using the wrong products, or following generic advice that doesn't apply to their machine.
We'll build you a machine-specific cleaning kit: the correct supplies, a maintenance guide written for your model, and a cleaning schedule you can actually follow. Every kit is manually reviewed before it ships.
Tell us your machine. We handle the rest and ship it to you.
After checkout, a real espresso technician will review your machine and manually build your kit. We'll ship it with a maintenance guide and cleaning schedule written for your model.

What happens inside a machine that isn't cleaned correctly
Every shot of espresso leaves behind coffee oils, fine grounds, and milk residue. Over time, that buildup affects taste, restricts flow, and puts real stress on your machine's components.
Coffee oils go rancid. Old oil residue in your group head and portafilter baskets makes every shot taste bitter and stale — regardless of how good your beans are.
Milk residue hardens fast. Milk proteins left in a steam wand or milk system for even a few hours start to break down and clog. A few days and the damage can be permanent.
Most cleaning problems aren't about neglect — they're about not knowing the right product or the right schedule for a specific machine. That's exactly what we fix.
Group head buildup kills flavor
Coffee oil and grounds accumulate in the group head gasket, shower screen, and dispersion block. Regular backflushing with the right detergent keeps extraction clean and consistent.
Steam wands clog silently
Milk residue hardens inside the steam tip after every use. Purging and wiping after each session is the minimum — periodic soaking keeps the wand flowing properly.
Descaling and cleaning are different
Descalers remove mineral scale. Cleaning tablets remove coffee oils. They're not interchangeable — and using the wrong one doesn't solve the actual problem.
Frequency depends on your machine
A superautomatic needs daily attention in different places than a manual machine. Single boilers, heat exchangers, and dual boilers each have different routines.
What most espresso machine owners get wrong about cleaning
These are the habits that quietly degrade machines — and flavor — over time.
Using dish soap
Dish soap leaves a residue that contaminates flavor and can damage seals and gaskets. Espresso machine cleaning requires purpose-formulated detergents — and the right ones depend on your machine.
Cleaning on the wrong schedule
A machine used three times a day needs attention more often than one used three times a week. Generic "clean monthly" advice is written for no machine in particular.
Skipping backflushing
Manual and semi-automatic machines with a three-way solenoid valve need regular backflushing with detergent. Skipping it lets oils accumulate in the group head where they affect every shot.
Ignoring the drip tray and drain
The drip tray and drain path are breeding grounds for mold and bacterial growth. They need regular removal and cleaning — not just emptying when they overflow.
Not cleaning after milk use
Milk proteins begin to break down within hours of use. Machines with steam wands or integrated milk systems need attention after every session — not once a week.
Conflating descaling with cleaning
Running a descaling cycle doesn't clean coffee oils, and running a cleaning cycle doesn't remove scale. Both are necessary — at different intervals, with different products.
- Your machine's group head type E61 group heads, saturated groups, and commercial-style portafilters each require different cleaning approaches and compatible detergents.
- Whether your machine backflushes Machines with a three-way solenoid valve can be backflushed. Machines without one cannot. Using backflush detergent on the wrong machine wastes product and misses the actual problem.
- Your milk system configuration Pannarello wands, commercial steam wands, and automatic milk systems each have different cleaning requirements — and different failure modes when neglected.
- How often you use the machine Daily use versus occasional use changes how frequently different components need attention. A single schedule doesn't fit every household.
- Manufacturer-approved products Some manufacturers specify or approve particular cleaning products. Using incompatible detergents can void warranties or damage internal components.
The right supplies depend on your specific machine
Most cleaning kits sold online are assembled for the average espresso machine — which means they're optimized for no machine in particular. They include products that may not apply to your setup, and leave out products that your machine actually needs.
The goal isn't to own every espresso cleaning product. It's to have exactly the right products for your machine — and to know when and how to use them.
Our Personalized Cleaning Kit is built around your machine. We review your model, identify what it actually needs, and ship you the supplies, guide, and schedule to maintain it correctly.
